Below are some strategies on how to improve the use of texts in your classroom.
B-D-A Method. B-D-A stands for Before, During After. This method requires that students complete intentional assignments before, during, and after the selected reading text.
Some possible before reading activities include: discussions that deal with a theme in the text, modeling a learning strategy that students will need during the reading. This is also an important time to provide historical or social context to the text so that students have a greater understanding of author's purpose and the significance.
During reading activities: create a storyboard of what is happening, answer questions connected to the text, highlight new vocabulary, annotate for thesis, summary or questions using annotation symbols, ask guest speakers to come and read with the class, retelling what happened in the text to a pair,
Activities for after reading: literature circles, essays, debates, create newspapers based on the novels students are reading, connections to present newspapers
